about

“This is serious music that refuses to take itself too seriously”

There is a new wave of South Africans making a name for themselves at the height of the country’s uncontested dominance of Gqom, Amapiano and Afro House. In direct response to that a young producer is taking a defiantly anti-purist approach to music—moving from house to boom-bap and blending his dirty drums with some captivatingly unusual back of the crate samples.

The Kolour Of Water, the new Album from the 24-year-old upstart Zito Mowa, satisfies the nostalgia of a time when an album served the fundamental statement of a musician's aesthetic. Mowa has been making waves in the underground house scene since his 2018 debut EP and has gained attention from European countries and the rest of Africa. T.K.O.W, was originally created as an EP. It has a loose, groovy feel influenced by beatmakers like J Dilla & Max Graef as it does to most scuffed house producers.

In this “experimental album”, Mowa teams up with Switzerland’s Donnie Moustaki, UK’s Malik Ameer, South Africa’s Ziyon, Tahir Jone, Meltonic, Zizipho Bam and OKAY GOD.
